Joni Mitchell wanted to be a painter. Then Calgary got hold of her. She enrolled at Alberta College of Art in 1963, according to Alberta University of the Arts, the school the college became, and that one year bent her whole plan.
Where she came from
She was born Roberta Joan Anderson on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. The Canadian Encyclopedia says she grew up partly in Saskatoon, where she had polio as a child and recovered fully. After high school she came back to Alberta for art college in Calgary. Pretty great homecoming.
What happened in Calgary
Two things ran side by side. She studied visual art, and she performed at The Depression, a coffeehouse.
The Songwriters Hall of Fame profile says she arrived with painting in mind and that the folk club performances took over. She stayed one year.
Here’s our take. That year is the most fun stretch of her whole biography, because nothing’s settled yet. She isn’t a star. She hasn’t won a Grammy. Her name isn’t on a record sleeve. She’s a first-year art student with a guitar, and you get to picture her there.
What came next
A lot, and fast. She moved to Toronto in the summer of 1964 to pursue folk singing. The Canadian Encyclopedia then traces a move to New York in early 1967 and to southern California the same year.
In December 1968, Judy Collins’s recording of Both Sides Now reached the national Top 10, and in 1970 Mitchell won her first Grammy, for Best Folk Performance. She was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1981.
Calgary claims her back
It did, and we love it. AUArts announced that she would receive an honorary Master of Fine Arts at its 2026 convocation, as the school marks 100 years of instruction. AUArts says she called the recognition very unexpected and congratulated the school on its century.
The school’s own timeline is worth a glance too. It says the institution was the Art Department from 1926 until the early 1960s, so Mitchell studied there during a period of change.
A painter who became a songwriter, honoured by an art school. That’s a tidy ending. And Calgary gets to say it was there at the start. So put on a Joni record tonight, and picture that first-year student with the guitar. Then go read the AUArts story and the Canadian Encyclopedia entry for the rest.
For a different angle, read W.O. Mitchell made High River a literary address. Betty Mitchell, the botanist who built Calgary theatre is good too. Or try The Hip Farewell Came to Studio Bell for a change of pace.
