One look at the puppet in the new sizzle reel and you’ll stop scrolling. Carved face, glowing eyes, tall grass swaying around it. It’s a still from the 2026 reel that ACTRA Alberta’s Puppeteer Committee put together, and it says plenty about what Alberta puppeteers can do.
The committee’s mission is short and sweet: represent, support and grow Alberta’s puppetry community. ACTRA Alberta credits the 2026 boom to productions like Fraggle Rock and Joe Pickett.
The range is the fun part. Hand puppets, animatronics, marionettes, remote control rigs, motion and face capture, and digital puppetry all sit under one roof here. That is a lot of ways to bring a character to life.
The committee has a to-do list, and it’s an ambitious one. It wants outside productions to hire Alberta puppeteers, plans training so performers can build long careers, and will organize workshops and events. It also plans to explain what union membership means for puppeteers, from residuals and buyouts to AI and digital work.
This all lands neatly beside what we already know about the union. ACTRA Alberta backs performers with grants, tips and stunt trophies, and it represents over 1,500 members as one of nine ACTRA branches. Puppeteers now have a table of their own inside that group.
