Two awards, one sold-out room and a Calgary optometrist with a very good wardrobe. Legacy of a Butterfly just had the kind of festival run filmmakers dream about.
According to the Calgary International Film Festival awards page, the documentary by director Monique Barrie won both the Audience Choice Alberta Short award and the Devon Bolton Memorial Alberta Short Film Award. The Bolton prize is juried and comes with $1,000 and a $10,000 gift certificate to Sunbelt Rentals.
The night at The GRAND
The film played on September 29 at 6:30 p.m. in Alberta Spirit Shorts Night 1, and LHI Productions says the house at The GRAND was sold out. Dr. Diana Monea, the film’s subject, was part of the evening, and Barrie sent the biggest thank-you to her for sharing her story.
We covered the film when it was first selected, in our post on its two CIFF screening slots, and we’ve been rooting for it ever since. The short is also nominated for four Rosie Awards, so there’s more to cheer for in November.
