Wynonna Earp Calgary filming began in September 2015, when IDW Entertainment announced that principal photography would start that month in Calgary, Alberta. The release is dated September 16, 2015.
It named Melanie Scrofano as Wynonna, with Tim Rozon and Shamier Anderson in the cast. It described a 13 hour supernatural thriller series headed for the Syfy Channel, with a premiere set for April 2016.
The same announcement says the series was available for pre-sale at MIPCOM, the international TV market, before a single episode had aired. That is a lot of faith to put in a Calgary shoot.
Travel Alberta adds the part that sends you out with a map. It says the show was filmed in and around Calgary, with Didsbury’s main street and the Foothills in the mix.
Didsbury sits north of Calgary, and its main street is the kind small town Alberta does well. We think it’s the best reason to pick this show for a day trip. Our Heartland locations guide shows how a small Alberta town can carry a series, and Didsbury makes a good sequel.
Travel Alberta lists Wynonna Earp beside The Last of Us, Heartland and My Life with the Walter Boys, which is a handy snapshot of how many kinds of TV Calgary and the surrounding towns handle. A supernatural western thriller fits right in.
Shows like this need people and places behind them. ACTRA Alberta backs the performers who work on shoots like this, and the Calgary Film Centre gave the city studio space that opened in 2016. For the funding side, see our post on the Alberta Film Commission.
Drive up to Didsbury, walk the main street, and then pull up an episode and compare.
