Legends of the Fall is set in Montana, but Travel Alberta says it was filmed along the Bow River, in Banff National Park and in the Ghost River Wilderness Area. That puts a good share of the film’s big mountain scenery squarely in Alberta.
The film also has the hardware to prove it was worth the trip. John Toll won the Academy Award for cinematography for Legends of the Fall, at the ceremony held on March 27, 1995, according to the Academy’s own records.
Travel Alberta’s page sorts the film into its list of movies filmed in Alberta and dates it to 1994. The same list names The Revenant, which used Kananaskis, the Bow Valley and Horseshoe Canyon in the Canadian Badlands. A movie from 1994 and a movie from 2015 both found what they needed in the same province.
Of those three Alberta locations, the Bow River is the easy one to visit. It runs through Banff and carries on to Calgary, so you can stand beside it in either place. The Ghost River Wilderness Area is the one to look up before you go.
This puts the film in good company on our site. The Revenant found its frozen frontier in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley, Unforgiven built a town in the foothills, and Interstellar used southern Alberta fields and small town stadiums. Montana has the setting. Alberta keeps getting the cameras.
Our post on the Alberta Film Commission explains the funding that still brings productions here. For a list of other titles shot around the province, Travel Alberta keeps a handy page.
Rewatch the film and keep an eye on the water. The Bow River is easy to find on a map of Alberta and easier to find in person.
